Specialist Psychiatrist

Psychiatrists are specialists in mental health issues.  Unlike psychologists, psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication. 

They diagnose, assess, treat and prevent human mental, emotional and behavioural issues. 

Psychiatrists often deal with very complex and chronic mental health cases.  

How to become qualified in this field (learning path)

  1. NSC or NC(v) with Bachelor’s Degree Pass
  2. Degree: Bachelor of Medicine:
    1. Theoretical training: 6 years.
    2. Student internship: 1 year.
    3. Community Service: 1 year

* Post-graduate study: 4 years specialisation: MMed (Psychiatry).

Duration of study

4 Years Post Grad studies after completing the MBChB degree to obtain an MMed (Psychiatry) degree.

Employment

Psychiatrists have many opportunities for employment including:

  • State hospitals
  • Clinics
  • Private practice
