In celebration of Human Rights Day, the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) is giving away two learnerships for school-leavers looking to start their phlebotomy careers. Entries are open for tomorrow only through the HWSETA career portal, online here. Entries close at midnight on 21 March 2023.
Phlebotomy technicians collect blood from patients and prepare the samples for testing. They work mainly in hospitals, medical and diagnostic laboratories, and doctor’s offices. This career is perfect for students who want to work in the healthcare sector, but didn’t excel at maths and science.
Sound interesting? Then this exciting lucky draw competition is what you’ve been looking for! To be eligible for the Phlebotomy Technician Learnership, you need:
- A valid Grade 12 School leaving certificate.
- English at NQF level 3 (matric).
- Mathematics/Maths Literacy at NQF level 3 (matric).
- Life Sciences (Biology) at NQF Level 3 (matric).
- Excellent communication skills in English.
On top of that, there are certain soft skills that any good phlebotomy technician should have. Working with patients day to day means you’ll need to have a natural sense of compassion and patience. People of all ages and all walks of life need to have their blood drawn, and many are afraid of needles! In addition, some patients may be anxious about their state of health, and will look to you for reassurance. A good phlebotomist knows how to put people at ease while maintaining a professional attitude.
In addition, you should have strong attention to detail. After all, you’ll be handling sensitive information alongside very detailed procedures. Being accurate and safe while working under pressure is no easy task. Noting down information, taking accurate measurements, labelling samples, and sending them to the right place: this is all part of a phlebotomy technician’s daily work.
Feel like you have what it takes? Then, enter today to win one of two 2-year Phlebotomy Technician learnerships at Neuberg Global Lab in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The programme is fully funded and is open to applicants who reside in KZN, as no accommodation is provided. The course itself starts in April 2023.
Winners will be announced on 24 March 2023.
