The most important criteria for a career in caring for aged or disabled people is crucial that you are a very caring, patient and empathetic person. Elderly or disabled people need very specialised care and this often means you are not only performing specific tasks but are a supportive companion to your client.

Your tasks will be wide-ranging, but can include the following:

• Making sure your clients take their prescribed medication
• You might have to assist your client with getting around their home or helping to get them to doctor’s appointments etc
• Helping your client with physical exercise
• Assisting with the personal hygiene of your client/patient
• Be able to act quickly in the case of an emergency
• You may have to perform shopping or light cleaning duties as well, and sometimes be required to cook for your client.

Get the Required Qualifications

Depending on your level of school qualifications there are many opportunities to study for a career in this field.

For Grade 9 upwards (if your National Senior Certificate is incomplete), you will have to complete a Foundational Learning Competence Certificate prior to commencing with this Skills Programme.

A certificate in first aid is also a helpful qualification to have if you want to enter into this field.

Demonstrate Competence in School Subjects

While institutions have different entry requirements, there are no specific school subjects required for this field in general. Some institutions, however, will recognise prior experience in this field to go towards your official qualification.
