Addictions Counsellor

Addictions counsellors fall under the umbrella of psychology as the basis for this career.  It’s estimated that around 11% of South Africans suffer from different forms of addictions. 

As an addictions counsellor, your role will be to help change the patterns of addicts and to help them understand the underlying factors of why they are addicts. 

Often as an addictions counsellor, you’ll liaise directly with the patient’s family as well as providing community education on addiction issues. 

How to be an Addictions Counsellor in South Africa

Get the Required Qualifications

To become an addictions counsellor in South Africa, you will typically need the following qualifications:

1. NSC or NC(V) certificate.
2. Bachelor’s Degree (Bachelor Degree with a major in psychology, after which you’ll need a further Honours Degree in Psychology.
3. Internship (6-month internship under the supervision of a registered psychologist)

Note that you’ll need to pass a national examination of the Professional Board for Psychology.

Demonstrate Competence in the Required Subjects

Entry requirements may differ per institution, but you will generally be expected to show competency in the following subjects:

• English
• Math

Addictions counsellor in South Africa typically study between 6 months to four years.

Qualified addictions counsellor in South Africa can either seek employment with a company, clinic or hospital or go into private practise, depending on your qualification. 

You will need to register with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in order to work.

You will always need to treat your patients within your specific discipline and according to the guidelines, ethics and legalities outlined by the HPCSA and the Department of Health.
